How Credibly Do CMIP6 Simulations Capture Historical Mean and Extreme Precipitation Changes?

چکیده

Future precipitation changes are typically estimated from climate model simulations, while the credibility of such projections needs to be assessed by their ability capture observed changes. Here we evaluate how skillfully historical simulations contributing Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) in mean and extreme precipitation. We find that CMIP6 represent over large parts Europe, Asia, northeastern North America, South America western Australia, whereas a lack skill is apparent Africa. In particular regions with moderate availability very ensembles can beneficial improve simulation accuracy. regionally skillful where they (positive or negative) trends, found characterized negative trends simulates increases.

Signal detectability in extreme precipitation changes assessed from twentieth century climate simulations

This study assesses the detectability of external influences in changes of precipitation extremes in the twentieth century, which is explored through a perfect model analysis with an ensemble of coupled global climate model (GCM) simulations. Three indices of precipitation extremes are defined from the generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution: the 20-year return value (P20), the median (Pm)...

Global-mean precipitation and black carbon in AR4 simulations

[1] How much and why precipitation changes as the climate warms is uncertain, even for the global mean. In the 21st Century of the IPCC AR4 A1b forcing scenario, globalmean precipitation increase per degree warming varies among models by over a factor of three. Clear-sky atmospheric shortwave absorption change explains over half of the intermodel spread (r = 0.61) in precipitation increase. Rem...

Evaluation of the mean and extreme precipitation regimes from the ENSEMBLES regional climate multimodel simulations over Spain

[1] A state‐of‐the‐art ensemble of regional climate model (RCM) simulations provided by the European Union–funded project ENSEMBLES is used to test the ability of RCMs to reproduce the mean and extreme precipitation regimes over Spain. To this aim, ERA‐40– driven simulations at 25 km resolution are compared with the 20 km daily precipitation grid Spain02, considering the period 1960–2000. This ...
